Ride on the wild side in the heart of the Great Rift Valley.
This is not your typical safari in a vehicle. This one-day adventure offers a rare thrill: the chance to ride a bicycle alongside zebras, giraffes, gazelles, and warthogs in their natural habitat.
Hell’s Gate National Park is one of the few parks in Kenya that allows walking and cycling. Famous for its spectacular scenery—towering cliffs, stark rock towers, and deep gorges that inspired the landscapes of Disney’s “The Lion King”—it is an outdoor lover’s paradise. Because there are no large predators (like lions or elephants) in this section of the park, it is safe to explore on two wheels.
After an active morning, the tour shifts gears to relaxation. A short drive takes you to Lake Naivasha, a beautiful freshwater lake in the Rift Valley floor, for a boat safari to see lounging hippos and incredible birdlife, including the majestic African Fish Eagle.
Yuda Lions Tours & Travel provides comfortable transport from Nairobi and arranges well-maintained mountain bikes for a seamless day of adventure.
Highlights
- Fitness Level: This is an active trip. You must be comfortable riding a bicycle for about 14km total (7km in, 7km out) on dirt roads. It is not a race, but a basic level of fitness is required. The ride back to the gate has a slight uphill incline. If you cannot cycle, you may stay in the support vehicle and do a standard game drive, but the experience is best on a bike.
- Safety: While there are no predators, buffaloes are present in the park. They can be grumpy. Always follow your guide's instructions and maintain a significant distance from buffalo herds.
- The Gorge: The hike inside the gorge can be slippery and involves some scrambling over rocks. Sturdy closed shoes are absolutely necessary.
- What to Wear & Bring: Comfortable athletic clothing suitable for cycling (shorts/leggings). Closed-toe trainers or hiking shoes (no flip-flops for the biking/hiking portion). Sun protection (hat, sunglasses, strong sunscreen)—there is very little shade on the cycling route. A small backpack to carry water during the ride. Your passport/ID for park entry.
